Unknown Covered Bridges
These two covered bridges both came from a collection of slides I purchased that were mostly taken in Oregon. They are unlabeled, even with year. Any help in identifying them would be appreciated!
This bridge has now been identified as the Hufford Covered Bridge.
Thank you to Colette below, this has been indentified as the Foster Covered Bridge.
Wow, what a great find! Do you think the two pictures are the same bridge? They look similar (both the characteristic Linn County style) but I don’t see anything in the backgrounds that are the same.
The wigwam burner in the second one is a great identifier. Check out this photograph http://photos.salemhistory.net/cdm/singleitem/collection/max/id/4752/rec/1 It even has the same lone tall tree.
Colette, I believe you found it! Weirdly, Foster Bridge is not listed Lee H. Nelson’s “Oregon Covered Bridges.” I have the 1976 edition which should be the most up to date…
I don’t think the first bridge is the same one though. I’m leaning towards it being the Hufford Bridge across the Middle Santiam River on Hufford Road off of Quartville Road. It is listed as “3 miles east of Foster.” The surroundings look the same, and they both have the Howe Truss system with the exposed sides. If that is the case though, it was destroyed in 1966 when the Foster Reservoir was created. http://photos.salemhistory.net/cdm/ref/collection/max/id/4764
