Gilkey Station, Oregon

Description:

On my recent trip through here, it appears that even the old history sign that marked the location of Gilkey Station is gone. It supposedly said “Gilkey Station was established when the railroad arrived in 1880 and was named in honor of Allen and William Gilkey. Gilkey served as a shipping point for farm products.”

All that is left is the historic covered bridge, although the town never even had a large enough population to get a post office. One interesting tidbit of information from 1915 is found in “Oregon Public Service Commission – Annual Report #9, in case Number F-393 “Gilkey vs. Southern Pacific Co.”

Leonard Gilkey sued the Southern Pacific Company because the station here was supposedly inadequate. The judge apparently agreed, and ordered the Southern Pacific to erect a suitable shelter within 30 days.
