Oakland Ferry, San Fransisco, California
Oakland Ferry Trip
While an unpopular opinion among some groups of people, I have to state that I’m really starting to enjoy Oakland as a place to stay while I’m in the Bay Area. OK, not Oakland in general, but Certainly Jack London Square and the downtown area. I especially appreciate Jack London Square with it’s easy access to the Ferry to cross the Bay to San Francisco.
While waiting for the ferry, it’s fun to look at the boats. The most impressive of which is the Potomac, which served as President Franklin Roosevelt’s presidential yacht until his death.
Riding through the natural canal created by the docks and the Alameda Air Station is a fun trip. It can get a bit choppy once the ferry gets out on the bay, but on a clear day the view of Treasure Island and the Oakland Bay Bridge is worth the ride.
The ferry has to pass under the bridge as it gets close to the Ferry Building in San Francisco. Several cruise ships dock just a few piers up, several more go the other direction.
At this point I usually walk through the Terminal Building looking at all the food options and taking samples every once in a while as I head to the actual waterfront. A brisk fifteen minute walk put you at Fisherman’s Wharf and within easy access of all that San Francisco’s waterfront has to offer the weary and hungry tourist.
