Oregon Native Indian History Resources

Oregon Native Indian History Resources

This is a huge subject because we had so many tribes that were very drastically culturally different from each other. The other problem is that by the time Oregon was being settled, most of the tribes had high death rates. The Willamette Valley saw 90%+ mortality rates with tribes like the [Canemah tribe of the Calapooya ](http://pnwphotoblog.com/canemah-oregon-falls-city-willamette-river-ghost-town/)reduced to one individual due to disease and intertribal wars.

I’d start with Wikipedia’s list of recognized Native American Tribes in Oregon

There are several books about specific tribes or years that are really good.

And if you want to get really nerdy, there is a [Chinook Jargon dictionary](https://books.google.com/books?id=NRsOAAAAIAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=oregon+chinook+language&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiV64XohI3PAhVOz2MKHRLjCbsQ6AEIHDAA#v=onepage&q=oregon%20chinook%20language&f=false) that is pretty cool to read. I love going through it and matching words to maps.
